York Junior Chess Day, 07/10/2017

Report by Peter Cloudsdale

Photos by David G. Mills

The above event was held at Archbishop Junior School, York.  50 children attended from all over Yorkshire.

The popular event was opened by the Lord Mayor of York, Councillor Barbara Boyce.

(Click here for more photographs below.)

Lateefah Messam-Sparkes from London, a full-time chess professional, and IM Andrew Ledger from Sheffield were the 2 guest ECF‑accredited coaches.

A good game was shown initially to highlight how to develop in the opening.  This was followed by a 4-round Swiss competition, in 3 sections depending on ability.  Between play, general advice was given, and problem solving was shown.

Thanks for support from the ECF and Chess & Bridge, and various individual volunteers.

An excellent venue, and thanks to the school.

White Rose Junior Chess Academy ran the event.  The next one on 19th November at Ackworth School for problem solving and later a Rapidplay.  See ECF Calendar of events.

Best wishes,
