For the 1892-93
season, Halifax, Wakefield, Huddersfield and Dewsbury withdrew from the
Woodhouse Cup, leaving Leeds (Chess Club), Sheffield (& District Chess
Association), Bradford (Chess Club) and Hull (& District Chess Association)
from the previous season, these being joined by the previous season’s
Bradford Observer winners, Leeds Draughts and Chess Club, meaning the new
line-up featured two Leeds clubs.
In an attempt to
deal with the problems of teams being deterred from travelling long
distances, the rule had been introduced that if the distance by rail between
teams was more than 25 miles, then the venue was to be an intermediate
one. Otherwise the venue was to be that of the team drawn as the
“home” team, as before.
As there were now
less than eight entrants, the pairings were one again on an all-play-all once
basis. The initial draw was published as in the following table, though
in the event, Leeds v Hull was played on 18/02/1893, as explained lower down:

Pairings in italics were not played due to the withdrawal
of Leeds D&C C, then Bradford.
* Venue to be an intermediate one, unless otherwise mutually
agreed,
otherwise first-named was home team.
(Click on underlined pairing for match details.)
The rule which
precluded the team winning the Minor Trophy competition playing in it again
in the following season, forcing them into the Woodhouse Cup, seems too
frequently to have resulted in that team withdrawing from the Woodhouse,
after the pairings had been made. Leeds Draughts and Chess Club, Minor
Trophy winners of 1891-92, were in this way forced into the Woodhouse for
1892-93. They had a bye in round one, but withdrew from the competition
before round two.
Then, having
played their first-round match, Bradford withdrew, perhaps in part, at least,
because they were faced with an away match against Hull for their next match.
The fourth-round
Leeds v Hull match was played on the date fixed for round three in view of
the hiatus in the fixture schedule created by the two withdrawals. Had
Leeds lost to Hull, then the three matches between Hull, Leeds and Sheffield
would have had to be replayed, but in the event, Leeds won.
