James White Problem - Answers

The mate in 5 goes:  1. Kd5 Kc8 2. Kc6 Kb8 (or 2. … Kd8 3. Re6+ Kc8 4. Re8#) 3. Re8+ Ka7 4. Rc8 (for instance) Ka6 5. Ra8#.

The mate in 4 goes:  1. e6 Kc8 2. Rd7 Kb8 3. d7 Kc8/a8 4. e8=Q#  (A rook would also suffice after 3. … Ka8.)

Now for James White’s actual stipulation:

White mates with Bishop in six moves.

1. e6 Kc8 2. Bf4 Kd8 3. Rf7 Kc8/e8 4. Kd5 Kd8 5. Rf8+ Ke7 6. Bd6#
