Fortunes in the Open changed significantly for some, as compared with last year.  Daniel Alsina Leal of Leeds, last year's winner, struggled, managing only 3½ out of the first 6 rounds, then withdrew.  Meanwhile, Sarakauskas Gediminas of Guildford, who finished 9th to 14th equal last year, stormed his way to 9½ out of 11, finishing in first place, drawing with Daniel Gormally (2nd-3rd= on 8½) and Mike Surtees (11th-17th equal on 5½).

The one-day event, though it seems a good idea, drew few entries, perhaps due to the relative “out-of-the-wayness” of Ilkley being a disincentive to the more casual player.  (One of last year's Open entrants chose not to play this year because of logistics.)
