24/11/2017 (updated 07/12/2017) John Toothill, R. I. P. - 1938-2017
John was born in Bradford and attended Bradford Grammar School, as did brother Andrew.
He was a very strong chess player and moved to Kendal to work as Lake District Planning Manager.
We met in a county match between Yorkshire and Cumbria. John played the Marshall Attack in the Ruy Lopez and won easily. He then gave me a lift back to Ambleside.
John and I were members of Windermere Club and we did well in the National Club event. For many years Windermere dominated the Cumbrian team Championships.
John had great qualities. A real gentleman and always willing to help younger players to improve.
A truly decent and hardworking individual.
My sincere good wishes to Sylvia, the family and all his many chess friends and other acquaintances.
Peter Cloudsdale York 24th November 2017
John Toothill was born on 09/05/1938, in Bradford. He died on 22/11/2017 at Preston Hospital, where he was taken after becoming ill during a chess match. The funeral took place at 1.00 pm on Tuesday 5th December 2017, at Burneside Church (St. Oswald), Chapel Field, Burneside, near Kendal, Cumbria, LA9 6QP, followed by interment at Parkside Cemetery. The funeral was attended by Peter Cloudsale, among other friends and former work colleagues. Donations, if desired, for Kendal Mountain Search & Rescue c/o funeral directors Hayes & Parkinson Ltd of Kendal.
Further notes:
John was strong correspondence chess player, gaining the International Correspondence Chess Master title in 1981. He retired from the National Park Authority in 1998, but continued as an active chess-player to the end. In 2000 he won the ECF’s Senior (over 60, he was 62) Championship. Younger brother Andrew, formerly also of Bradford Chess Club, is now a member of Breadsall Chess Club.
The following game, chosen by Peter Cloudsdale, was won by John Toothill (White) against Bernard Cafferty (Black, long a devotee of Alekhine’s defence), in the British Championship at Swansea, 1981.
