There are a number of
things not related to chess which I had hoped to spend more time on after I
retired in September 2010, as well as existing chess-related projects which
I don’t have adequate time to pursue, so I have decided to close down
this website as regards its function as a Yorkshire chess news website.
The functions it
has served could and should be carried out by the Yorkshire Chess
Association on its own website, as was the case when this was officially
the YCA website. Granted, the current YCA website seems not to have
been updated at all this season. The list of YCA officers etc is out
of date. I know of one requested update to the club information page,
which has not been applied. I could go on.
It would seem,
therefore, an auspicious moment for the YCA to restart its own website
ready for the 2025-26 season, ideally with a much younger webmaster, but I
feel the presence of this Yorkshire News Website is inhibiting that
process.
Some content of
this site, such as what you can still access via this home page, may in
time be shunted across to other websites such as my Yorkshire Chess History
website.
It’s been
fun, but all good things come to an end!

I see
the YCA website has very recently undergone a long-needed update.
The
list of officers has now been updated on “About Us”.
Notice
of the 2025 AGM has appeared on “News” page. (A
notice was sent out by Dale Cullum on 25/03/2025, and the accounts on
28/05/2025. As regards the accounts, I might point out that the
£143.86 for Website and e-mails refers to the YCA website of course,
not this one, which has never cost the YCA anything. If anyone wants
to see this website’s coverage of the 2024 YCA AGM at the time, see here.)
There
is a list of vacancies (YCA Treasurer, Under 2050 team Captain, Under 1450s
Team Captain), low down on the left of “About us”, unlikely
ever to be read by many people; interestingly there’s no webmaster
vacancy, so maybe the existing website is to be maintained appropriately in
future.
Doncaster
still does not exist on the “Clubs” page!
The
“Resources”
page (hidden under “More”) now carries the YCA Constitution and
YCA Rules, long missing, and it now carries YCA AGM 2024 minutes replacing
the 2023 minutes which have now gone (so no archiving).
At this
point it might be worth mentioning that some reporting of
“Events” on this website routinely has been duplicated
elsewhere, so coverage of congresses like Scarborough’s is expected
to continue to be found on the NCCU
website, while people in Sheffield can still see more-local stuff on
the S&DCA website.
Coverage of Yorkshire’s county matches ought to go on the YCA website
of course, but also appears on the NCCU site.

Coverage
of Chessable White Rose teams in the 4NCL will presumably similarly appear
on the new super-dooper YCA website, so will not be covered on the NCCU
website and probably not on the S&DCA website though this webmaster is
thinking about that one, in view of Sheffield’s CWR connections.
