Bradford Congress 2018 14-16/09/2018 at the Bradford Latvian Club, 5 Clifton Villas, off Manningham Lane, Bradford
This year’s Bradford congress attracted 89 entries, 4 more than last year’s event, but still short of those in 2016 (102).
The fact that Northern Rail was operating a reduced service, due to a strike, will not have helped, and may have caused some withdrawals before the end.
Bradford City Football Club was at home to Charlton on the Saturday, and as the Latvian Club is favoured by local football fans for their pre-match alcoholic refreshments, things were a bit busy around lunchtime that day.
David Barlow has taken over as entry secretary from long-serving Stuart Swire. The event was controlled by Peter Purland (Open and Major) and Ihor Lewyk (Minor). The playing area is in the upstairs room of the main building, with the week-to-week clubroom at the back serving as an analysis room. Reasonably-priced refreshments were available, and Chess Direct had a bookstall there.
