Chess:

He played for Lancashire of North Manchester against Yorkshire teams in the following matches: 1902 Yorkshire v Lancashire, 1904 Yorkshire v Lancashire, 1904 Huddersfield v North Manchester, 1905 Yorkshire v Lancashire, 1906 Lancashire v Yorkshire, 1907 Lancashire v Yorkshire, 1908 Lancashire v Yorkshire and 1912 Lancashire v Yorkshire.

Notes:

1) “Lobel” in German is spelt with an umlaut on the “o”, i.e. as “Löbel”, or as “Loebel”, using the alternative orthography.  In England the name was usually spelt simply as “Lobel”, in the interests of typographic ease as much as anything, which policy is adopted here.

2) There was a 15 year-old Carl Lobel who arrived with his parents and four siblings at Hull, on 23/03/1881, aboard a ship from Hamburg bound for America, via Liverpool.  It seems quite possible this was our man, but it is difficult to be sure.

Note:

Venn gives date of birth as 16/07/1858, which is clearly a mistake for 16/07/1857, as Venn also gives age on 25/10/1875 as 18, implying birth in 1856/57, and 16/07/1857 agrees with censuses, birth index etc.
