Marriage:

Children:

Residence,

03/04/1881: Derby House, Derbyshire Lane, Stretford (with parents and siblings); clerk to attorney

31/03/1901: 25 Wellington Street East, Salford (with siblings & an uncle); solicitor’s managing clerk

Chess:

He was active in Manchester chess at least from 1886 to 1894.  He was a member of the Manchester Athenaeum Chess club, being on the Committee in 1890-91 (at least).  He played in both North v South matches of 1893 and 1894, and also the 1894 Manchester v West Riding match, but did not play in county matches against Yorkshire, it seems.

Notes:

“A. T. Hargreaves” crops up often, but a full forename never seems to be given.  Births registered in names answering to “A. T. Hargreaves” are those of Arthur Thomas Hargreaves, birth reg. 1848, Manchester, and Abraham Taylor Hargreaves, birth reg. 1850, Rochdale, and finally this Arthur Thomas Hargreaves.  Abraham Taylor Hargreaves died in 1891, well before “A. T. Hargreaves” stopped playing chess, so can be discounted.  Arthur Thomas Hargreaves is less easy to dismiss.  There is no death record evident for him, unless it be under “Arthur Hargreaves”.  Turning to census records, this Arthur Thomas Hargreaves is the only “A. T. Hargreaves” evident, while looking at those listed as simply “Arthur Hargreaves” in 1891 in the broad Manchester area throws up only a cotton weaver, brewery stoker and such.  Thus this Arthur Thomas Hargreaves, a solicitor’s clerk, is the only plausible candidate to be the chess-player.
