This return match was played at Whitby on Wednesday 25th April 1894, over 12 boards, 2 games being played, time permitting, at each board. The Yorkshire Herald and York Herald, Thursday 26th April 1894, reported on the game as follows:
CHESS SCARBOROUGH v. WHITBY
The previous match had been over twelve boards.
“W. Peguero” clearly means R. Peguero, unless 8-year-old son William was standing in for his father.
“Mr. E. Wallace” looks intended to mean Mr. E. Wallis.
“Dr. Berkeley” of Scarborough seems not to have existed, and looks like a reference to Dr. William Henry Beverley (born 1855, Leeds) who was a surgeon practicing in Scarborough at this time, residing at 13 Albion Road, Scarborough.
“G. W. Nicholson” would appear to mean “J. W. Nicholson”.
