14/09/2024 FIDE Chess Olympiad 2024 Round 4
Going into round 4 of the Open section, 16 teams had 6 match points out of 6, and England Open team lay in 17th-26th= position on 5 match points out of 6. Facing Georgia, England looked slightly stronger on the basis of ratings, but one has to wonder how closely FIDE ratings around the world are consistent with each other. Papua New Guinea, on 2 match points, lay 95th-158th=.
Going into round 4 of the Women’s section, England Women were 1 of 16 teams on 6 match points out of 6, and for the first time faced serious opposition in the form of China, ceding on average 119 rating points on each board (16 old-style grading points).
Papua New Guinea got off to a bad start with losses on boards 2 and 4, while England Women got off to a bad start with losses on boards 2 and 3, so a drawn match was the best either could hope for. However, England Women plunged to a 0-4 loss. Meanwhile, PNG board 3, Rupert Jones, drew, so the team would lose, but board 1 looked like winning (and he did win). The England Open team drew on boards 2 and 4 but then lost on board 3, but Howell on board 1 looked like winning. Howell plodded along trying to engineer a win, going round in circles for much of the time, and eventually winning after 113 moves after his opponent arguably got too clever and slipped into a loss.
