15/09/2024 FIDE Chess Olympiad 2024 Round 5
After round 4, the leader groups were becoming distinctly smaller.
In the Open, there were 8 teams on 8 match points out of 8: India, Spain, China, Vietnam, Azerbaijan, Poland, Hungary and Ukraine. There followed 4 teams on 7 out of 8. In the group of 37 on 6 out of 8 were England and the USA, the latter perhaps being a team one would expect still to be in the leading group. Papua New Guinea were 130th-171st= on 2 out of 8.
In the Women’s section, there were also 8 teams on 7 out of 8, then 5 on 7, with England in the group of 30 on 6.
For Papua New Guinea, Rupert Jones on board 3 benefitted from his opponent getting over-excited and neglecting to recapture in a minor piece exchange. After his opponent’s 13th move, Rupert had a winning game. Stuart Fancy’s opponent on board 1 similarly got too carried away with the attack and neglected to keep count of the pieces. PNG cruised to a 2½‑1½ win. Meanwhile, for England, Michael Adams and Gawain Jones looked to be developing superior positions. Nikita Vitugov drew and Michale Adams won, leaving David Howell’s game looking drawish, though he lost, but with Gawain Jones looking to be winning (and he did win). Three hours into the match, England women looked fairly even on all boards, but they drifted to a 1½‑2½ loss.
Results were as follows.
