For the season
1886-87, the previous season’s final four participants (after three of
the original entrants for that season had withdrawn) were joined by Halifax,
one of the previous season’s three withdrawals.
Hitherto, Rule 7 had
provided for 2 games had been played on each board, time permitting, while
Rule 10 provided for reversing colour for the second game. At West
Yorkshire Chess Association committee meeting on Saturday, 06/11/1886, the
previous Rule 7 was replaced by the following:
That each player
play one game only, drawn games to count one half, the duration of play in
each match to be four hours, and that upon the completion of two
hours’ play, the game may be suspended upon the claim of either
player for a period of not exceeding 20 minutes such suspension to cover
the claim of both players, one game to be scored for each player for whom
no opponent is provided. This rule to apply equally to the matches in
which more than the minimum are engaged.
|
Thus only one game
would be played on each board, resulting in a much slower rate of play, and
possibly “better” chess. (Rule 10 was altered
correspondingly to remove the provision regarding colour in the second game.)
The rule that the
smaller town in a pairing could choose the number of boards from a minimum of
8 to a minimum of 20.
The original
fixture list for the season 1886-87 was as follows (first-named in each
pairing being the home team):
* in the event this was postponed to 12/03/1887

* Scoring was 1 match
point for a win, and half a match point for a draw.
Various
local papers covered these matches. The details below are as
represented in undated, unattributed newspaper cuttings pasted into the West
Yorkshire Chess Association minutes book, presumably from the Bradford
Observer, whose chess column at that time was written by Hertwig Cassel, who was also WYCA
hon. sec. at the time. Cross-checking with the Leeds Mercury,
the Sheffield & Rotherham Independent and other papers would be
possible. Some obvious typographical errors have been corrected for the
purposes of the following match details:
