Played at Dewsbury, on Saturday 06/04/1878, over 6 boards, 3 games per board (time permitting)
A report on this match was carried by the Huddersfield College Magazine, Vol.6, page 223.
Taking on Huddersfield was for Dewsbury a tall order, and for this match the Dewsbury Working Men’s Club team “barred” Huddersfield’s John Watkinson and Joseph Henry Scott Finlinson. Though this improved Dewsbury’s chances of avoiding a whitewash, they were hampered by their best player, Seth Ward (senior), being unavailable.
Play began around 3.40 p.m. Play was to conclude at 8.30 p.m., at which stage any unfinished games were to be deemed drawn. Results as reported by the HCM were as follows:
The HCM reported that when “time” was called, the second game on board 2, and the third game on board 4, were unfinished and hence deemed drawn, as described above. “The Huddersfield players were hospitably entertained by their opponents, and the general arrangements for the match were of a satisfactory character.”
Fuller identities of the players wold appear to be as follows:
