Arthur Finlinson was a younger brother of Joseph Henry Scott Finlinson (q.v. for early family details).
The 1861 census found Arthur and his four siblings living together. The 1871 census found 19-year-old Arthur now living separate from his siblings, as a boarder in a lodging house kept by the widowed Martha Starkey in Fenton Square, Huddersfield. He was listed as a bank clerk.
On 15th April 1875, at the age of 23, and now living at 11 York Place, Huddersfield, he married 19-year-old Mary Ann Walker, daughter of Jabez Walker, a manufacturer of South Street, Huddersfield.
Arthur and Mary Ann Finlinson had at least the following two children:
The 1881 census found Arthur, with his wife and daughter, living at Trinity Street, Huddersfield. Arthur was described as a bank cashier. Kelly's Directory of West Riding of Yorkshire, 1881, gives their address more specifically as 34 Trinity Street, though it gives the surname as “Finlayson”.
The 1891 census found the family, now including Norman, living at Bank House, Chancery Lane, Huddersfield, with two servants.
The 1901 census found Arthur and his wife, now without the children, living at 53 New North Road, Huddersfield. Arthur was now listed as a bank manager.
The 1911 census found Arthur and his wife still at 53 New North Road, but now with Norman living with then again. Norman was described as a stockbroker working on his own account.
At some time from 1911 to 1923, Arthur moved to Harrogate.
Death
Arthur Finlinson died on 12th March 1923, at Harrogate. His residence at the time was 48 Leeds Road, Harrogate. Probate was granted at London, on 18th April 1923, to his son Norman and one Alfred Roberts, bank manager. He left effects totalling £27,847 3s. 1d.
His daughter, Edith Maud Finlinson, died 30th December 1960, aged 82, and was buried in the same grave as Arthur’s brother J. H.S. Finlinson and others members of the family.
Chess
He attended the West Yorkshire Chess Association meetings of 1869, 1870, 1871, 1872, 1873, 1874, 1876, 1877, 1878 and 1884.
He played in the Huddersfield Chess Club Championship of 1873, and doubtless other years.
