Non-Chess Life
There are chess records placing James Paterson Roberton (without an “s”) in Huddersfield from 1861 to 1886.
His marriage took place in 1862, in Huddersfield.
The 1871 census found him living in the home of his cousin, George Balfour (born 1839/40, Scotland) and George’s wife, Emiline Balfour (born 1845/46, Huddersfield). So were was his wife? His place of birth was given merely as “Scotland”. George Balfour was a woollen salesman. James Paterson Roberton was a yarn merchant.
There are numerous people called James Roberton in the Scottish census of 1841, 1851 and 1861, but without more information, it is impossible to identify which, if any, represent our man.
James Paterson Roberton is elusive in the 1881 census. He was no longer living with cousin George Balfour.
Death
A record of the death of James Paterson Roberton is hard to find.
