Settle had won on the previous two times when these two teams had met, see 1859 Settle v Bradford (played at Settle), and 1860 Bradford v Settle (played at Bradford).
On this occasion the teams met at an intermediate venue, namely Skipton, and Bradford managed to reverse their previous misfortunes.
