The match was contested for a prize, which was a copy of Alexandre’s Treatise on Chess.

In its report on the match, the Leeds Mercury of 08/12/1859 anticipated a return match later in December, but in the event the return match wasn’t played until 25/02/1860.

Slater's Commercial Directory of Durham, Northumberland & Yorkshire, 1855, listed

John Armistead, linen and woollen draper, Settle,

John Birkbeck, Esq., Giggleswick (under gentry etc)

It also listed William Thomas Burrow, surgeon, Settle, whose seems likely to be connected with J.H. Burrow.
