North versus South On-line Match

One of the ideas for keeping chess going, albeit through on-line play, is that of a North of England versus South of England match which is reminiscent of two such matches played over the board on 28/01/1893 in Birmingham, and 07/04/1894 in London.  On those occasions the South won 53½-52½ and 64½-43½ respectively.  These matches predated the formation of the regional Unions, and the North-South divide ran through what is now the MCCUs territory.  (An interesting historical fact is that Lincolnshire, now a Midland county, was one of the original constituent counties of the NCCU.

On 5th September 2020, an on-line version is to take place, with Mike Riding of Northumberland acting as captain for the North, and Anthony Fulton of Middlesex acting as captain for the South.  You need to have some sort of 2020-21 ECF membership to take part, though that could be merely mean becoming a £10 “ECF Supporter”, which could, if later necessary, be upgraded to Bronze, or whatever, by “paying the difference”.

For present purposes, the “North” is defined as the NCCU and MCCU combined, and the “South” is defined as the SCCU, West of England CU and East Anglia CU.  (Former MCCU affiliate Oxfordshire counts as in the North.  The North-South divide as used back in 1893 & 1894 can be found at .)

North captain Mick Riding has sent out a recruitment e-mail, asking that it be circulated, which is as follows:

ECF North v South Challenge

On September 5 we have the opportunity to take part in a historic re-match between North and South, the first since 1894.

The occasion is about participating.  Of course it's nice if you're a 200+ ECF player, but us lesser mortals need not worry.  The match will look to pair people up as closely as possible to their playing strength - so there's room for all.

On the back of our stand-out efforts in the County, Pool and U100 matches, this would be a big fat cherry on the cake.  And The North has never won this challenge.  Time to put that right, yes? 🙂

The only pre-requisite is ECF membership.  Be aware most expire end August.  So if you haven't renewed please do - or at least sign up as a Supporter (£10) which can later be upgraded to membership - and your £10 will counts towards membership.
