18/05/2019 British Championships, 2020 – Provisional Dates
The 2020 British Championships “should” have been held over the 10 days Friday 24th July to Sunday 2nd August. However, the 44th World Chess Olympiad is to take place from 1st to 15th August (both Saturdays) in the Russian city of Ханты‑Мансыйск, or Khanty‑Mansiysk if you (or your browser) don’t read Cyrillic script. Moving the 10-day event clear of the Olympiad, either way, would apparently lead to a clash with school term times in one or other part of the country, so it has provisionally been decided to stretch the event back to 14 days, and hold it over the 14 days Saturday 18th July to Sunday 31st July, 2020.
The idea seems to be to retain the recently introduced 9-round format for the Championship, which would start on Saturday 18th and run through to Sunday 26th, so giving participants also playing in the Olympiad time to get there. Other “main” events would similarly start in the first week, while junior events would start in the second week.
