27/10/2019
European Team Championships
24/10/2019 to 02/11/2019, in the 5-star Hotel
Sheraton, Batumi, Georgia.
(The original introductory blurb has been moved
way below, here.)
The England
Open team finished 2nd-3rd out of 40 teams with the Ukraine on match
points (14 match points), behind first-placed Russia (15 match points), but 3rd
after applying tie break, which is essentially the Sonneborn-Berger method.
The England Women’s team finished 27th out of 32 (6 match
points), with Russia winning this event as well. So nothing much has changed
over the last 50 years.

In
round 9
the Open team faced Germany, and it could well have been an action replay of
the 1966 (football) World Cup, but without any “extra time”, as a 2-2 draw
was for a while quite possible. In the event, the Germany board 3 found a
way to lose, while there were draws om the other three boards, so England
won.
In round 8, England were for the first time on table 1,
against Russia. The England top three boards chugged along with things
fairly even, though one went on to lose. Gawain Jones on board 4,
however, with Black in a Grünfeld Exchange, played more entertainingly with a
pawn sacrifice to get the bishop pair. White returned the pawn for what
one would assume was a crushing king-side attack, but Black held on and White
then dropped the exchange. This was either a gross oversight by the
Russian White-player, or else it was the equivalent of offering a draw, as
the outcome was White delivering perpetual check. (Time may have been a
factor.) England thus scored 2-2 against top-seeded Russia, just as
they had in the first round versus Austria (seeded 22nd).
Yorkshire-born
Gawain Jones
got off to a poor start; in fact he did not play in round 2, so perhaps was
indisposed. Anyway, he scored three wins in a row on board 4, in rounds
5 to 7. Whilst the higher boards were doubtless playing some good
chess, their games for the most part were not as interesting or amusing to
the casual player, as those playedon board 4 in rounds 5 to 7. The run
of wins ended in round 8 with a miraculous-looking draw. These four
games, that on board 1 in round 8, and that on board 3 in round 9 can be
played through by clicking on the following links.

Introductory Blurb
International
chess accounts for, on average, approximately 22% of the ECF’s annual
expenditure budget, which mainly goes towards entering teams in the Olympiads
and European team championships, which fall in alternate years; last year it
was the Olympiad, this year it is the European Team Championships, next year
it will be the Olympiad again. It there were more money to spend then
other events could be entered.
England
have an Open team and a Women’s team in action. On average FIDE ratings
of the players, England’s Open team is ranked 2nd out of 40 teams, behind
Russia, though the teams at the top are close, with Poland averaging only
points less than England! The outcome will be determined more by form
on the day and stamina than be predictable by ratings. England Women
are ranked 24th out of 32 and so are less likely to create much excitement
for spectators waving St. George’s flag.
The
nine rounds are played one per day, except for a break on 29/10/2019, with
play starting at 2 p.m. (our time) for the first three rounds, then, after
BST ends, at 1 p. m. up to and including round 8. Round 9 switches to
the morning, and starts at 7 a.m. our time. The left-hand player on
board 1 in each match had white, with colours alternating down the team.
