55th Hull Chess Congress, 2018
Hull Chess Congress was set spinning by John Lawson back in 1964. Around the late 1960s, I (Steve Mann) was in two successive years given Black in round 1 against Hull’s John W Atkinson, who won on both occasions. The next year I was allowed to play a different opponent in round 1, that being around 1969, and I ended up joint winner of the top section with Brian Jones (then of Sheffield, now of Australia).
The 55th Hull Chess Congress was held on the 2nd to 4th of November, 2018, at Hymers College, Hymers Avenue, Hull HU3 1LW. This time, first place in the Open was shared by Dietmar Kolbus of the Isle of Man, and Bawtry-resident Jim Burnett. Last year’s winner, Hull’s own John Cooper, finished a “mere” 5th to 8th equal this time.
For the first time, pairings were done by computer, with the results ending up on ChessResults.com, and Douglas Vleeshhower is doing the ECF grading “in house”, something other congresses might well consider.
Section cross-tables appear on this website and ChessResults.com as follows:
