Pennine Cup 2016

Just as one swallow does not make a summer, two teams do not make a Jamboree.  Nevertheless, attempts to hold the Pennine Cup competition for county under-16 (age) teams, which was normally held as a one-day Jamboree, have since 2013 only resulted in two participating counties.  In 2016, the teams were billed as “Northumbria” (presumably extending a little southwards from Northumberland proper, into Co. Durham) and Cumbria.  This was organised by Paul Bielby of Durham, and took place in Newcastle-upon-Tyne on 17/03/2016.  Teams were of 10 players, and there were two rounds, with a given player thereby encountering two different opponents, as normal in a Jamboree, rather than replaying the same opponent with colours reversed.

The result was a resounding Northumbria 18˝- 1˝ Cumbria.

Board-by-board results were as follows:

Given the disparity of team strengths, a “home” fixture for Cumbria might have been more appropriate, but then more entries will have been hoped for.
