15/09/2026 46th Chess Olympiad
The 46th Chess Olympiad organised by FIDE is being held in the Silk Road International Exhibition Centre, Samarkand, Uzbekistan, from 15th to 27th of September 2026. The primary activities are the 11-round Open national team tournament (open to players of both genders) and Women-only national team tournament. An initial press conference was held, and various “commissions” such as rules commission are held in alongside the chess competitions.
Yorkshire’s Rupert Jones is sometimes involved in such commissions, and has even played for his native Papua New Guinea. On this occasion Rupert’s business colleague Jonathan Arnott has been roped in to captain the PNG Open team. Given that Gawain Maroroa-Jones is in the England Open squad, Yorkshire and particularly Sheffield are represented, one way or another, at the Olympiad!

The playing schedule for the 11 rounds is as follows, all starting at 15.00 local time, which is GMT+5, i.e. the present BST+4, i.e. 11.00 a.m. BST.
There were 217 Open teams and 191 Women’s team in the initial line-up.

The ECF seems not to have bothered to advertise the Olympiad, but maybe daily reports will start.
