The number of competitions has changed over the years, and after the introduction of grade/rating-limited competitions, the cut-offs have changed from time to time.  These competition changes have resulted in reassignment of trophies, so that the counties whose names are engraved on a given trophy did not necessarily all win the same competition, but rather a series of successive competitions for which the trophy was used or retrospectively engraved.  The category headings below are placed where changes occurred in the BCF/ECF or NCCU categories.  The columns correspond to the NCCU trophy applied to the competition in the column concerned.

The introduction by the ECF of grade-limited competitions will have been occasioned in part by increased non-participation by weaker counties who were demoralised by continually being outgunned by the stronger counties.  This was foreshadowed in the NCCU when Durham, who had earlier dropped out, where readmitted for 1989-90 fielding only a “second” team, without a first team!

Absence of winners’ names from the 2nd-team championship prior to 1968 may be attributable in part to there being no such competition in the earlier years, but may later be attributable to there simply being no trophy in use at the time.  The same principle applies to other “missing” winners; either there was no competition or there was no trophy.  There are other “grey” areas (literally grey in the chart).  See below.

Grey Areas

Sometimes, when a trophy is introduced, winners from the period predating the trophy are engraved on it, and in at least one case these earlier winners were in fact winners of a different competition!  Thus, the Under 175 Shield has engraving for 1968 onwards, although the Under 175 competition did not start until 1992-93!  The winners prior to 1993 are clearly winners of the second teams’ competition, which is well documented as existing and was not grade-limited.  (The writer was a regular player in the combined 1st-team and 2nd-team fixtures of the period.)  Was there never a 2nd-team trophy?  Was it lost?  If so, were the 2nd team winners “back-engraved” on a newly procured Under-175 trophy?

Sources are not wholly consistent, which is not too surprising!  There are primarily three sources from which to compile lists:

1) secretarial records of one sort or another (usually not available from too far back),

2) engraving on trophies (occasionally wrong!)

3) the lists in the NCCU Centenary booklet (easiest to use) which presumably, as regards earlier years, was primarily transcribed from trophies.

Also there are individual counties’ records, where available.

Occasional errors are inevitable, considering the pressures or tedium of some processes.

The U-125 winners for 1993 and 1995 differ in different sources.  This clouded by the fact that the BCF introduced an U-130 section for 1991-92, only to replace it with the U-125 from 1992-93 onwards.  Was there an Under-130 competition in 1991-92, and if so, who won?

Something not reflected above is that the BCF had initiated a “Minor” section for 1971-72, and this was open both to second teams and also first/only teams of “weak” counties (ones which had not played in the Open section for five years, or something like that).  Then, for 1981-82, this was replaced “by both a Second Teams’ competition, and a separate Minor Counties’ championship open just to the “weak” counties.  The NCCU never had a Minor Counties’ competition.  This might explain the confusion regarding early U-125 winners.

For 2014 in the Under-140, the earlier website carried a blank, and the secretary’s “calendar” gives “n/a”, yet the 2014 AGM minutes record Lancashire as winners.

The U-150 trophy lacks a 1993 engraving but the Centenary booklet gives Lancashire’s name, and for 1995 the trophy records Cleveland’s name whereas the booklet gives Lancashire as does the previous version of the website.
