1) Northern Counties Chess Union
Five counties contested the NCCU team championship of 1935-36, Cheshire, Durham, Lancashire, Northumberland and Yorkshire.
In the preliminary round, Lancashire played Cheshire on 02/11/1935, at Altrincham, over 30 boards. At the close of play the score stood at 16‑11 in Lancashire’s favour, with 3 unfinished games left for adjudication.
The first round pairings were Lancashire v Northumberland, and Yorkshire v Durham, both matches to be played on 18/01/1936, though in the event the first-mentioned match was played a week early.
Lancashire v Northumberland on 11/01/1936, at York over 16 boards
At the close of play the score stood at 6½‑3½ in Lancashire’s favour, with 6 unfinished games left for adjudication. Lancashire was expected to win by a significant margin.
Yorkshire v Durham on 18/01/1936, at Darlington Temperance Institute, Gladstone Street, Darlington over 18 boards
Sheffield’s J. S. Richardson was Yorkshire’s match captain and travelled to the match, though he did not play. Durham’s board one was the reigning Durham county champion. Somewhat exceptionally, the results of all games were determined on the day, without resort to adjudication of unfinished games, resulting in a 10‑8 win for Yorkshire, as follows:.
The NCCU team championship final was thus between Yorkshire and Lancashire.
Yorkshire v Lancashire on 21/03/1936, at Manchester over 30 boards
Yorkshire thus won the NCCU team championship, and progressed to the English Counties’ Championship.
2) British Chess Federation
Worcestershire met Warwickshire in the final of the Midland Counties team championship, on 07/03/1936, at Birmingham. The score at the close of play was 5½‑4½ in favour of Worcestershire, with an expectation that the adjudication of the 6 unfinished games would result in a win by the odd point for Worcestershire. In the event, the final result was 9½‑6½ in favour of Worcestershire.
Middlesex met Cambridgeshire in the final of the Southern Counties team championship, on 09/05/1936, at Cambridge. Middlesex had the reigning British Champion, W. Winter, on board one, but he only drew with P. S. Milner-Barry. The Cambridgeshire board 4 was the Kent champion of 1921 and 1922, I. T. Sefton, who was brother to S. E. Sefton, who was Sheffield’s Postmaster-Surveyor and a member of the Sheffield GPO team in the Sheffield Works’ league. The Cambridgeshire board 16 was former Sheffield player H. W. Scarlett. The result was a 12‑4 win to Middlesex.
The pairings for the English Counties’ team championship were Yorkshire v Middlesex in the semi-final, to be played on 10/10/1936, with the winners meeting Worcestershire in the final, to be played on 12/12/1936.
Yorkshire v Middlesex on 10/10/1936, at Leeds Chess Club, over 12 boards
Middlesex went on to beat Worcestershire 7½‑4½ in the final, played on 12/12/1936, at Birmingham.
