Grosmont is a village on the (North Yorkshire) River Esk, about six miles inland from Whitby at the mouth of the Esk, and to the south-west of Whitby.  It is on the railway line from Middlesborough to Whitby, and is also the northern terminus of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.  The existence of the railways will have been a significant help in enabling Grosmont Chess Club to play matches against other clubs, such as those at Whitby and Malton (whose chess club was known as “Derwent”).

 

Quite when Grosmont Chess Club came into being is unclear, but it features in the 1880s and 1890s in matches, usually against Whitby.  The club may well have drawn players from the broader rural area of the Esk valley around Grosmont.

Some of the Grosmont players appear to have sometimes played for Whitby Chess Club in matches against the much larger town of Scarborough.
