Dr. Francis William Smailes |

Non-Chess Life
The birth of Francis William Smailes was registered at Pickering in the first quarter of 1856. He was a son of Whitby-born Wesleyan Minister Richard Smailes (born 1816/17) and his wife Jane Smailes (born 1822/23, Brough). This couple had at least the following six children:
The places of birth of the children show how the family moved around, presumably as the Rev. Richard Smailes took up successive posts.
The 1861 found the parents and above six children living in Bradwell, Derbyshire, with two servants, and the Rev. Richard Smailes’s 56-year-old mother-in-law, Ann Green, who was described as a farmer.
F. White’s Directory & Topography of Sheffield, 1862, listed the Wesleyan Rev. Richard Smailes in Bradwell.
Our man is elusive in the 1871 census. Brother Frederick William Smailes went to Cambridge University in 1873 then entered the church. Our ma was destined for medicine, and it seems he may have found his way back to his native Pickering by 1880.
The marriage of Francis William Smailes to Pickering-born Ann Elizabeth Stericker took place at Pickering on 28/09/1880.
The 1881 census nevertheless found Francis William Smailes and his wife Ann Elizabeth Smailes, both aged 25, at Wellington Road, Bollington, Cheshire. Our man was described as “General Practitioner LRCPVC” (Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians . . ??).
By 1886, Dr. Smailes had moved to Grosmont, in the general vicinity of his and his wife’s native tow of Pickering. The 1891 found the couple, allegedly aged 35 and 31 respectively, living with one servant at Ings Bank Villa, Grosmont.
Death
The death of Francis William Smailes was registered at Lewes, Sussex, in the fourth quarter of 1897.
Chess
Dr. Smailes played for Grosmont against Whitby in 1886 and 1890.
