The Leeds Mercury Weekly Supplement of 27/12/1884 carried a report of a match under the following confusing heading:

MATCH AT WHITBY.- Played last Saturday at Grosmont.

This match was probably played at Whitby, not Grosmont, as there was later a “return” match played at Grosmont, six miles or so inland from Whitby.

Two games or three games were played on each board.  The method of reporting scores on each board left it unclear as to whether, 1-1 meant a win each or else two draws.
