Day 3

The standard-rate championships duly got started around 14.30 p.m. on day 3 (2nd August) with round 1 of the British Championship proper and the Major Open.

Of the 100 players listed as participating in the main Championship event, of whom one player may be of the nature of a “filler” playing in rounds where there would otherwise be an odd number, there were 9 players identifiably connected to the Northern Counties either by club or residence.  In the following table, those Northern players are denoted by “N”.  The list shows the top 11 players in the full list of 100 entrants when ranked by descending order of their ratings being used in the tournament, followed by the remaining 6 Northern players similarly ranked.  Players round-1 results are in the rightmost collum.

The corresponding player list for the 138 Major Open players, with the top 12 participants followed by the remainder of the 34 Northern players, is as follows.  Players round-1 results are in the rightmost collum.  Sheffield’s Jonathan Arnott tried to squeeze a win out of a drawn ending, and so converted a draw to a loss.  Click here to play through the game Arnott, Jonathan W 0-1 Ding, Yiwen on screen.
