2)   U-16 Age Inter-County Team Championship

(Pennine Cup)

The NCCU endeavours to run an Under-16 Age county team championship, usually in the form of a one-day “jamboree”, competing for the Pennine Cup (not to be confused with the NCCU’s Pennine Shield for U-140-grade teams).

In 1998, prominent Yorkshire player and energetic organiser, Gary Kenworthy (since long-resident way down south) instituted an Under-16 (age) team event to fill a perceived “gap”, for which he presented the Pennine Cup.  Although the Pennine Cup was originally independent of either the NCCU or the YCA, due to work-related pressures on Gary’s time, control of the event was passed to the NCCU, who from 2001-02 formally have organised it, or not organised it, as the case may be.

Winners from successive years are listed here,

in so far as the information has so far been tracked down.

3) Under-18 Team Inter-County Team Jamborees (now defunct)

From 1994-95, and probably before, there had been an NCCU Under-18 inter-county team jamboree.  Meanwhile, from 1999-00, there was a parallel event for under-18 girls.  The Girls’ event last took place in 2006-07, since when it hasn’t been held.  The Boys’ U-18 Jamboree was last held in 2011-12.  (Available further information is virtually zero.)

Information on past winners seems unavailable.

4) Correspondence Team competitions (now dormant or defunct)

Cumbria user to be the powerhouse behind correspondence chess in the NCCU.  In particular, Peter Tipper of Seascale was prominent as an organiser of correspondence chess in the NCCU.  In those days, of course, one licked stamps and posted moves in letterboxes.  These days “correspondence” chess it played on websites set up for the purpose.  For whatever reason, though probably for lack of an organiser, correspondence chess in the NCCU has fizzled out to zero, which is sad for those who would like to play.  On-line chess will of course not help its revival.

There used to be two competitions:

Sinclair Shield

(Promotion and relegation might in fact have applied between two divisions.)
