The Sheffield
& District Chess Association, though formed in 1883 to represent
Sheffield and district to the outside world, did not enter a team in the
Woodhouse Cup in its first season, 1884-85. Nevertheless, some matches
were arranged, including at least two against Huddersfield.
The Sheffield
Daily Telegraph of 14/04/1885 and the Leeds Mercury Weekly Supplement
of 18/04/1885 recorded the following match, played 11/04/1885, at the
Wentworth Arms (the Telegraph said Wentworth “Hotel”),
Penistone. This was described as a “return” match, though
it is unclear whether the prior match had been played in the same season, or
perhaps in 1884. Standards of reporting were improving as there was a
distinction made between two draws as opposed a win apiece on a given
board. (Hitherto, both cases were often represented imprecisely as
“1-1”.) The following gives names as reported in the Sheffield
Daily Telegraph, as the Leeds Mercury’s report included very
few initials.
