1872: Wakefield and Bradford

On 14th December 1872 a 9-board friendly match was played between Wakefield and Bradford at the Strafford Arms, Wakefield. As far as time permitted, three games were to be contested at each board. In the event, only on boards 1 and 9 were two games played. The result was close, with the only 3-0 “whitewash” being on board 5.

Colours, and the order in which games occurred on each board, are not implied in the following table of results:

* “Le Jeune” and “Pfau” defy attempts to identify them, being seemingly absent from censuses and directories. They could have lived in the Bradford area only briefly. Without initials they become very difficult to identify.
