On 14th December 1872 a 9-board friendly match was played between Wakefield and Bradford at the Strafford Arms, Wakefield. As far as time permitted, three games were to be contested at each board. In the event, only on boards 1 and 9 were two games played. The result was close, with the only 3-0 “whitewash” being on board 5.
Colours, and the order in which games occurred on each board, are not implied in the following table of results:
* presumably T Fieldsend rather than W Fieldsend.
Young’s win over Werner on board one went as follows: White: John William Young (Wakefield) Black: ME Werner (Bradford) 1. e4 e5 2. Nc3 Bc5 3. f4 Bxg1 4. Rxg1 exf4 5. Qg4 g5 6. d4 Nc6 7. Qd1 d6 8. Bb5 Bd7 9. Bxc6 bxc6 10. g3 fxg3 11. Rxg3 h6 12. Qf3 Nf6 13. Be3 g4 14. Qh1 Nh5 15. Rg1 Qe7 16. O-O-O f5 17. Kb1 f4 18. Bf2 Kd8 19. e5 d5 20. Nxd5 cxd5 21. Qxd5 Rb8 22. Rxg4 Qe6 23. Qxe6 Bxe6 24. Rh4 Rg8 25. Rxh5 Bg4 26. Rg1 Kd7 27. Rxh6 Be6 28. Rhg6 Rxg6 29. Rxg6 Rg8 30. Rxg8 Bxg8 31. b3 Ke6 32. c4 Kf5 33. Kc2 Ke4 34. Kd2 f3 35. h4 Bf7 36. h5 Bxh5 37. e6 a6 38. d5 Bg6 39. Bg3 Kd4 40. Bxc7 and Black resigned, 1-0
The identity of players more specifically would appear to be as follows:
* “Le Jeune” and “Pfau” defy attempts to identify them, being seemingly absent from censuses and directories. They could have lived in the Bradford area only briefly. Without initials they become very difficult to identify.
A report of the match was given in the Huddersfield Chess Magazine, vol.1, 1872-73, page 93, besides local papers.
