Scarborough Chess Rapid Play Event

11th May 2024

The Scarborough Chess Club, with Neil Pennock steering things, is looking to hold a one-day rapidplay chess event in Scarborough on the 11 May 2024.  Entry forms are available in Word format here and in pdf format here.

As the entry form explains, the aim, along with further events, is to commemorate the centenary of the first open chess tournament organised by Scarborough Chess Club, which boasted an impressive line-up of foreign participants including a certain up-and-coming Alexander Alexandrovich Alekhine!

Gerald Mutrie Reid, honorary secretary of Scarborough Chess Club was the architect of a series of roughly week-long congresses run in Scarborough in the name of Scarborough Chess Club, with three or so sections, the top section, at least, including a number of notable foreign players, so justifying the epithet “international”.  These ran from 1925 to 1929, and information about this earlier series of Scarborough Congresses can be found on the writer’s Yorkshire Chess History website at https://mannchess.org.uk/Events/1925-29%20Scarborough%20Whit%20Congresses.htm.

The present series of Scarborough congresses, not now actually run by Scarborough CC as such, began in 1977 with the congress held from 21st to 23rd October 1977, at The Corner, North Bay, Scarborough.  It was directed by D. McGregor, controlled by G. F. Walsh, and sponsored by McCain International Ltd.  (For the results see the December 1977 Yorkshire Bulletin, near the bottom of page 2.)
