Non-Chess Life

The parents of Henry Brougham Corner were Edward Corner (born 1825/26, Whitby) and Sarah Corner (born 1829, Whitby), who had at least the following nine children:

Mary Corner

born 1851/52

Francis Corner

born 1858/59

Annie Corner

born 1859/60

Edward Charles Corner

born 1860/61

Henry Brougham Corner

born 1861/62/63/64

Jane Corner

born 1863/64

Frederick Corner

born 1865/66

Charles Corner

born 1867/68/69

William Gladstone Corner

born Apr/May 1870

The children’s years of birth are based on the 1871 and 1881 censuses, and in the case of our man also the 1891 census and age stated at death.  Henry’s ages were inconsistently quoted, while those given for Charles could all be correct only if he were born on 03/04/1868.

Henry’s obituary reveals that, in adult life at least, he was known as “Harry”.

The 1871 census found parents Edward and Sarah, the above nine children, and three domestic servants, at Broad Ings, Ruswarp.  On the basis of the 1881 census this address would appear to have meant the farmhouse at Broad Ings Farm, on the modern A171, next to Cross Butts Farm.  Father Edward was by occupation a timber merchant and farmer of 90 acres employing 2 men and 1 boy.  All the children, except Mary and William, were scholars.

The 1881 census found the family living more specifically at Broad Ings farmhouse.  Edward and Sarah now had Henry, Charles and William still living with them, as well as two farm employees and two domestic servants.  Father Edward was now a timber merchant and farmer of 70 acres, employing two men and one woman.  Henry Brougham Corner (given his full name) was a timber merchant’s assistant, while Charles and William were scholars.

By 1891, the Corners had moved into central Whitby.  The 1891 census found father Edward with children Mary Corner, Annie Corner and Henry B Corner, and one domestic servant, living at 4 North Terrace, Whitby.  Father Edward was listed as married (not a widower) but his wife was not listed.  Edward was now a timber merchant and land agent.  Henry was also a timber merchant.

Kelly's Directory of N & E Ridings of Yorkshire, 1893, listed Corner & Brown, timber merchants, at “Saw mills” [Whitby].  “Brown” was William Brown.

The marriage of Henry Brougham Corner to Ellis Mary Clarkson (born 1871/72, Whitby) was registered in the second quarter of 1900, at Whitby.  The couple had at least one child:

Evelyn Mary Corner

born 1901/02, Whitby

Our man is elusive in the 1901 census.

The 1911 census found Henry Brougham Corner, wife Elllis Mary Corner, daughter Evelyn Mary Corner, and Henry’s unmarried sister-in-law, the quaintly named Hannah Clarkson Clarkson [recorded thus by Henry himself] (born 1868/69, Whitby) who had her own means.

Kelly's Directory of N & E Ridings of Yorkshire, 1913, listed Corner & Brown, timber merchants, Saw mills, Whitby; Henry Brougham Corner, timber merchant, Church Street, Whitby, and William Brown (of Corner & Brown), timber merchant.  Henry had thus seemingly moved home to Church Street.

By the time he died, Henry had moved to 22 Windsor Terrace, Whitby.

Death

The Whitby Gazette of Friday, 26/01/1934, under “Marriages” (because the heading “Deaths” had been omitted!), carried the following:

January 22nd, at 22 Windsor Terrace, aged 71 years, Henry Brougham Corner (Harry), beloved husband of Ellis M. Corner, and son of late Edward Corner, timber merchant.  To be interred today (Friday); funeral leaving house at 1.45 p.m. for service at St. Michael’s Church at 2 p.m.  Friends please accept this (the only) intimation.

Probate records tell us Henry Brougham Corner, of 22 Windsor Terrace, Whitby, died on 22/01/1934.  Probate was granted to Ellis Mary Corner, widow, and Evelyn Mary Wear, wife of William Gibson Wear.  He left effects of £2,559 17s 6d.
