held at the Pavilion Hotel, Westborough, Scarborough, from Saturday 18/05/1929, to Saturday 25/05/1929
The fifth Scarborough Whit Congress, which proved to be the last of the series, again received no funding from the council. A sign that things were perhaps becoming difficult for the organisers was the fact that the Premier tournament was reduced from 10 participants to only 8, and the lower all-play-all tournaments were reduced in numbers from 10 to 6 participants. Gerald Mutrie Reid was again secretary for the event.
The Premier tournament featured only one foreigner, a new face, namely the Ukrainian master Dr. Saviely Tartakover, who was based in Paris. The lower events were noticeably weaker than hitherto. Winners of the Second and Third tournaments played off to find an overall winner.
It was expected that Tartakover would be giving simultaneous and blindfold displays. The Yorkshire Telegraph and Star commented that, “The whole of the congress this year is in the nature of a social gathering, and arrangements have been made for chess players to take part in the dances and general Whitsuntide programme provided by the hotel.”
Premier Tournament
The 8-player Premier tournament was run as a single all-play-all event. Summarised results in the Premier tournament were as follows:
Second Tournament
The winner, John Frederick Keeble, was relatively rarely seen at that time playing chess, being much better known as a chess problemist. The other players’ results are not to hand.
Third Tournament
Dewsbury’s Maurice Winterburn was at the time only 15 years of age. The final score of only the winner is to hand.
Second-Third Tournament Play-off
Keeble beat Knight in the play-off.
