|
One of the first actions of the newly-formed Hull Chess Association was to arrange a visit from Joseph Henry Blackburne.
Accordingly, on Friday 13/01/1888, Blackburne gave a 25-board simultaneous display at the Gladstone Hall, Little Albion Street, Hull. Play started at 7.30 p.m., and concluded at midnight. Blackburne scored 15 wins, 8 draws, and 2 losses. Robert Harris Philip beat Blackburne in 25 moves. The other opponents included William Edward Trumble (HCA secretary & treasurer) and James Crake (president of the United Liberal chess Club, and formerly the chess columnist in the Bellman).
On Saturday 14/01/1888, at the same venue, Blackburne gave an 8-board blindfold simultaneous display. Blackburne won 4 games, drew three and lost 1. The loss was to Edmund Thorold’s sister. His opponents and their results (where known) were as follows:
Eliza Thorold’s place of residence was most probably Bridlington by this time. Before moving to Bridlington, she’d been living for a while with brother William in Scarborough.
