Sheffield’s Representative at the FIDE Chess Olympiad

The 2024 FIDE Chess Olympiad starts in Budapest on 10th September with pre-event meetings and an opening ceremony.  Actual play starts the following day.  Players selected for the two England teams are as follows, though when the following names were first published the matter of board order was yet to be decided.

Open (usually just Men):

Michael Adams; David Howell; Gawain Jones; Luke McShane; Nikita Vitiugov

Women:

Jovanka Houska; Harriet Hunt; Bodhana Sivanandan; Katarzyna Toma; Lan Yao

FIDE has yet to recognise the People’s Republic of South Yorkshire as a country eligible to participate in this event, yet Sheffield is actually represented.  Jonathan Arnott has tended his apologies for absence from the S&DCA Fixture Meeting because, as he put it, “I have had an offer which I can't possibly refuse - I've been appointed as the coach/captain for one of the national teams competing in this year's Olympiad in Budapest.  Most likely a once-in-a-lifetime chance.”

Jonathan has in fact been roped in as captain and coach for the Papua New Guinea team by Rupert Jones who was born in Papua New Guinea, his father being a missionary there at the time.

The Olympiad will not be followed on this website, though it is planned to cover part of the time  it on the Yorkshire Chess News website.
