31/10/2025 & 19/11/2025 & 23/11/2025 Sheffield Individual Championships 2025-26, Round 1 and Round 2 Draw
The Sheffield Championships, in three sections combined into a single Swiss event, has for some time been played with opponents agreeing between the date of their games, with the home player having choice of venue. As an experiment, for 2025-26 the event is being held with all games in a given round being played at a carefully pre-determined Wednesday (date picked so as to avoid individuals’ league fixtures) at the Sheffield Chess Centre. (Full details were published earlier at https://mannchess.org.uk/SNotices/2025-10-04SheffieldIndivuals.htm.)
Three trophies are at stake. Bruce Trophy for the overall winner; the Holroyd Trophy and the Shapero Trophy. Players are seeded, the top 6 seeds are being eligible to win only the (Sheffield Championship) Bruce Trophy. A further 6 seeds are eligible only to win the Bruce Trophy or failing that the (Class 2) Holroyd Trophy. The remainder are eligible to win any of the three trophies but are in most cases likely in contention only for the (Class 3) Shapero Trophy. Subject possibly to any late entries, the seeding is as follows. The top 6 eligible only for the Bruce Trophy are Nelson, Starley, Klimchik, Wills, Sullivan and Davis. The second 6 eligible for either the Bruce Trophy (improbable) or the Holroyd Trophy are Siu, Woozeer, Ryalls, Highland, Walshaw and Holroyd(!)-Doveton. The remainder are eligible for all three but will be primarily in contention for the Shapero Trophy.
Round 1 was held on 29/10/2025. There are an odd number of players at present, so controller Geoff Brown says, “I'm wondering if anybody else wants to sign up. Anyone that does will be allowed a half-point bye for round 1. Can you ask around at your clubs please? I would need to know no later than 15th November.”
Round 2 is to be held on 2611/2025, and the draw was published on LMS (at https://lms.englishchess.org.uk/lms/event/8638/rounds) a week beforehand on 19/11/2025, as below.
The round 1 results were as follows. There appear to have been no “upsets” rating-wise.
Round 2 pairings (slightly changed after the first set published):
