Born:

1867, Wakefield

Died:

1915, Wakefield

Four Wakefield-born members of the Staynes family played chess in Yorkshire over the period around 1885 to 1925 and probably beyond.  These were Joe Staynes, his younger brother George Ellis Staynes, and two of George’s sons, Thomas Arthur Staynes and Wilfred Staynes.  All played in the Woodhouse Cup for one or more of Wakefield, Huddersfield and Bradford,

Non-Chess Life

Parents and siblings of Joe (never “Joseph”) Staynes, are described in the entry for younger brother George Ellis Staynes, like whom he was fund living at the family home in Wakefield in 1871, 1881 and 1891.

By 1891, Joe had become a cabinetmaker.

In 1891 he married Lilly Hall (born 1866/67, Manchester), in Wakefield.  The couple had at least the following five children:

Nellie Staynes

born 1892, Wakefield

Joe Leonard Staynes

born 1894, Blackpool

Emily Clarice Staynes

born 1896, Leeds

Ernest Henry Staynes

born 1898, Leeds

Gwendoline Victoria Staynes

born 1900, Leeds

The fact that Joe junior was born in Blackpool, probably doesn’t imply the family was living there, rather that the mother had gone there for her “confinement”, perhaps to her parents.

Around 1893 to 1896 the family evidently moved to Leeds.

The 1901 census found him living with his wife and five children at Enfield Avenue, Sheepscar, Leeds, still a cabinetmaker.

The 1911 census found the family back in Wakefield.

Chess

He usually played for Wakefield in the Woodhouse Cup, e.g. in 1885-86, 1886-87 and 1891-92.  In 1889, when Wakefield lacked a Woodhouse tam, he played in the Woodhouse Cup for Bradford.  He attended WYCA meetings of 1885, 1888 and 1889 (and so on).

Death

He died at Wakefield in 1915.
