Non-Chess Life
The parents of Harry McWhire were John McWhire (born 1847/48, Parson Brow, Cambs.) and Celia McWhire (born 1848/49, Wisbech, Cambs.). The couple had at least the following two children:
The birth of Harry McWhire was registered in the third quarter of 1878, at Ashton-under-Lyne.
The 1881 census found the two parents and two children living with a servant at 20 Market Street, Ashton-under-Lyne. Father John was a grocer, employing 1 man and 1 boy.
The 1891 census found the family of four, now without a servant, living at 21 Sandy Lane, Royton, Lancashire. Royton is about two miles north of Oldham. The father was still a grocer, while the two children were now both scholars.
The 1901 census found the family of four still at 21 Sandy Lane, Royton. Father John was still a grocery-shop keeper, working on his own account. 22-year-old Harry was now grocer’s assistant, presumably working in his father’s shop.
The marriage of Harry McWhire to Elizabeth Ellen [maiden name?] (born 1881/82, Royton) was registered in the third quarter of 1908, at Ashton-under-Lyne.
The 1911 census found Harry and his wife living at 145 Rosebery Street, Moss Side, Manchester. Harry worked as a grocery and provisions manager. As yet the couple had no children.
Slater's Manchester, Salford & Suburban Directory, 1911, listed Harry McWhire, grocers’ manager, living at 145 Rosebery Street, Moss Side, Manchester.
In 1912, he moved from Manchester to Rotherham, where he was in business originally as a “manager” (presumably) working for someone else, but in time as a wholesale grocer (presumably running his own business).
White’s Sheffield & Rotherham Directory, 1912, listed Harry McWhire, manager, living at 27 Wharncliffe Street, Rotherham. He must have fairly soon moved, definitively.
The 1915 poll book for Rotherham listed Harry McWhire as residing at 5 Sherwood Crescent, Rotherham, which remained his home until his death in 1936. Sherwood Crescent is a short no through road off Wellgate, roughly opposite the Hollowgate turn-off.
White’s Sheffield & Rotherham Directory, 1916, listed Harry McWhire, grocers’ manager, living at 5 Sherwood Crescent, Rotherham. This entry was repeated in subsequent directories though to Kelly’s Sheffield & Rotherham Directory, 1925, inclusive.
Kelly’s Sheffield & Rotherham Directory, 1927, listed Harry McWhire, wholesale grocer, with business premises at Greasbrough Road, and home at 5 Sherwood Crescent, Rotherham. This entry was replicated through to 1935 inclusive.
Outside work he was involved with Masbrough Independent Chapel, where he was chairman of the “Peoples’ Own”.
Kelly’s Sheffield & Rotherham Directory, 19367, listed Harry McWhire (exors of), wholesale grocer, Greasbrough Road, and listed Elizabeth Ellen McWhire as resident at 5 Sherwood Crescent, Rotherham.
Death
Harry McWhire of 5 Sherwood Crescent, Rotherham, died at age 57, on 25/01/1936, at Rotherham Hospital. Probate was granted to Elizabeth Ellen McWhire, widow. He left £1,610 6s 7d.
Chess
He was one of the members of Rotherham Chess Club when it was resurrected around 1920.
In played in the 1922 simultaneous display by Kostich in Rotherham, and the 1922 simultaneous display by Capablanca in Rotherham.
In 1924 he won Rotherham Chess Club’s “Junior Trophy”, which was presumably a Class B trophy in relation to the Bingham Trophy as Class A. [Yorkshire Telegraph & Star of 04/10/1924]
In 1932 he won the Bingham Trophy competition for the Rotherham championship.
He played in the Woodhouse Cup, Davy Trophy and Rotherham League.
