Non-Chess Life

Harold Alvin Burton was born on 19/10/1883, in Wakefield, the only child of colliery agent Wilfred Burton (born 1860, Ackworth) and Louisa Burton (nee Chatterton, 1858, Whitley Bridge, about 10 miles east of Pontefract), who had married at Pontefract in 1882.

The 1901 census found the family of three living with a servant at Button Park, Pontefract, near to a branch of the Addingley family.  Father Wilfred was a colliery agent, while 17-year-old Harold was a cycle agent.

In 1907, Harold married Edith Credland Hoyle (born 26/06/1883, Featherstone), somewhere in the Fylde area of Lancashire (presumably the bride’s residence at the time).

The 1911 census found Harold had followed his father into the coal business.  Harold and Edith lived at Beechwood Avenue, Pontefract, about half a mile from Button Park, along with Harold’s parents.  Harold was now a coal merchant, employing other people, while father Wilfred was still a colliery agent “working on own a/c”.

Edmund W Burton was born to Harold and Edith on 25/09/1913, in Pontefract.

Harold’s father, Wilfred Burton, evidently died as some stage from 1911 to 1939.

The 1939 register found Harold, Edith and Edmund living with Harold’s widowed mother, Louisa, at 10 Linden Terrace, Pontefract, barely half a mile from Beechwood Avenue.  Harold was still a coal merchant.  Edmund was a technical assistant to a gas engineer.
