Quite why the ECF runs English Championships as well as British Championships may evade some people. The congress website as at 22/10/2026 listed 160 entrants, variously playing in just 1, or else 2 or even three of the separate event. Thus, the really keen entrant could enter a standard-rate section, a rapidplay section and a blitz section. Despite this latter consideration, an event with only 160 or so participants is not so major event as “English Chess Championship” might suggest.
