European Cup 2025

The European Chess Cup for 2025 was a 7-round 6-player team event organised by the European Chess Union, held from 19/10/2025 to 23/10/2025 at Rodos Palace on the Greek island of Rhodes.  The line-up included five teams recognisable as English 4NCL teams (highlighted below in yellow) of which one represented a Northern County, namely White Rose (i.e. the 4NCL White Rose squad), captained by Sheffield’s Jonathan Arnott.

Final rankings were determined primarily by match-point total, then as first tie-break a form of Sonneborn-Berger method which excludes a team’s lowest match-point score, then as second tie-break game-point total.  There were a third and a fourth tie-break method specified, though they didn’t need applying.

The White Rose team’s players and their round-by-round results and the teams they played were as follows:

All opposing teams were made up of players FIDE-registered with the country indicated except the Serbia-based SK Zmaj which comprised a mixture of nationalities.    Of course, Northern-based players popped up in other teams, such as Andrew Ledger of Sheffield in Blackthorne and John Fletcher of Sheffield in The Full Ponty.

A number of Welsh and Irish teams competed - The Full Ponty is Wales-based and St. Benildus is Dublin-based - but Scotland was represented by only Dundee City it seems.
