The 54th Rhyl Congress was held from 22nd to 24th of September 2023, meaning a year was missed in 2024. There was no Rhyl Congress in 1922, possibly due to Covid which would also explain no congress in 1921, and the previous Rhyl Congress was that of 2019. The congress had been held annually since 1967.
The initial enthusiasm for congress chess in Rhyl may have contributed to the British Chess Championships being held at Rhyl in 1969. “The British” was held from 11th to 24th of August, at what was then Llewelyn County Primary School (now Ysgol Llywelyn in Welsh), Trellewelyn Road, Rhyl, where the present writer played in the British Boys’ Under-16 Championship as one of a contingent of juniors from Sheffield & District.
