There were four sections. The junior event was held throughout the earlier part of Friday, and was thus completed by the start of the other sections. Sections and participants were as follows:

As is increasingly happening, there was broadcasting of live games via Lichess and Chess.com, in this event the Open games being broadcast live.

The Open being FIDE-rated meant pairings used FIDE ratings. A “problem” of this is that many players have significantly differing FIDE and ECF ratings, with their ECF rating being more accurate, especially in reflecting the strength of improving players. One such player is Tom Junde He, whose FIDE rating is 1942 (= old-style grade of 166) whereas his ECF rating is 2081K (= old-style grade of 184). In round 4, Keith Arkell, who had already jeopardised his chances of winning a high prize by drawing with Robert McLean whose FIDE rating is 1972 but an ECF rating of 2101A, was paired against the said Tom Junde He and again drew. Arkell tried his best to squeeze blood out of a stone, as the saying goes, from a rook and pawn ending, but eventually agreed to a draw at move 109, giving the controllers just about enough time to do the draw for round 5! The game is in fact quite instructive as regards engineering and defending against striving for a tangible advantage in a rook and pawn ending, initially with double rooks evolving into single rooks per player. The live boards for round 5 fired up as due to start at 5.30 on Monday morning and displayed the completed games from round 4, so the technique for this venture into live games evidently needs refining. Chess.com live games got sorted out first. Lichess eventually caught up.

Arkell was paired in round 5 against Daniel T Lee whose FIDE rating was 1941 and ECF rating is 2097K. Was this to be another draw. Actually, for quite some time it looked as though his opponent had the better of things and might even win. Arkell had sacrificed the exchange for a pawn, and the turning point came when his opponent returned the exchange, and things swung into Arkell’s favour.
