UK Chess Challenge: Teesside Megafinal 2024

The latest annual cycle of the Delancey-sponsored UK Chess Challenge, which event was initiated by Michael Basman in 1996, is under way.  The final result is a champion in each of the age groups Under-8, U-10, U-12, U-14 ,U-16 and U-18 (all born after 31/08/2005).  These are mixed-gender titles.

There has been an initial “warm-up” stage of events which were conducted within schools, and which serve to test the younger players’ enthusiasm for the intensive competitiveness of the main stages.  These main stages, now under way, consist of “Megafinals” from which those scoring 3½ or more qualify for the four “Gigafinals” (Northern, Southern, N. Ireland and on-line) which in turn provide 10 qualifiers for the final stage, the “Terrafinal” which is to be held at Blenheim Palace at Woodstock in Oxfordshire.  Northern and Southern Gigafinals produce 2 boy qualifiers and 1 girl qualifier, while the other two produce just 1 boy and 1 girl qualifier.  Non-qualifiers from the Gigafinal who score 5½ points or more can compete in a second-chance “Challengers” event which provides a further 2 qualifiers for the Terrafinal which is thus contested in each age group by just 12 players, both boys and girls mixed together.

Events are usually played at rapid-play time controls.

Megafinals scheduled in Northern territory are the following:

Sun 5th May

Sat 18th May

Sat 25th May (U8, 10) & Sun 26th May (U12, 14, 18)

Sun 9th June

The Teesside Megafinal duly took place on 05/05/2024 at Princess Alexandra Auditorium, Yarm School, Yarm, Stockton-on-Tees, TS15 9EJ, under the direction of long-established local organiser Sean Marsh.

A list of winners is to be found on a Chess in Schools and Communities Teesside website at https://cscteesside.blogspot.com/2024/05/the-seventh-teesside-megafinal-results.html.
