|
This tournament, incorporating the first round of the 1895 Yorkshire Championship, was held on Saturday 27th January 1895, at West Ward Liberal Club, Hanson Lane, Halifax. There were 48 entries as compared with 73 the previous year at Sheffield, divided into sections A, B, C and D, according to playing strength.
The Leeds Mercury Weekly Supplement of Saturday 19th January 1895 conveniently explained the format of the tournament as follows:
Class A, the competition for the county championship, contained sixteen players who would compete in a knock-out, the first two rounds of which would be held at this event, with subsequent rounds to be played at intervals thereafter. In the other Classes, players were grouped into sets of four-player two-round knock-outs, with the winner of each set winning a prize. The Leeds Mercury Weekly Supplement of Saturday 26th January 1895 contained the results of the day’s play:
Class A (Yorkshire Championship) First Round
d = by default, one player being absent t = on time
Class A (Yorkshire Championship) Second Round
* = unfinished; position to be referred to an expert.
Final results from round 2 and from subsequent rounds are not currently to hand.
