In a similar match in 1892, Derbyshire had been the victors. It’s a little surprising that the math was played over so few boards, given that both sides could, surely, raise a much larger number of players.

Derbyshire’s board 8 was very probably Edward Dale, civil engineer, who moved to Rotherham around 1902, but was resident in Staveley, Derbyshire, in 1891.
