Played on Saturday, 27/09/1884, at the Wentworth Arms, Penistone, over 15 boards, 2 games per board, time permitting
The Sheffield & District Chess Association, though formed in 1883 to represent Sheffield and district to the outside world, did not enter a team in the Woodhouse Cup in its first season, 1884-85. Nevertheless, some matches were arranged, including at least two against Huddersfield. (Click here for the “return” match to this one, though both, of course, were played at a neutral venue.)
The venue, Penistone, in the modern-day South Yorkshire, is between Sheffield and Huddersfield on the meandering railway line which connects the two, and is roughly halfway between the two as the crow flies, but significantly nearer Huddersfield in terms of distance along the track, due to the indirect route taken, via Barnsley. The latter consideration did of course make things convenient for the S&DCA players from Barnsley, and the S&DCA players from Penistone were of course playing at home! Penistone and Barnsley were strongly represented in an S&DCA team which could have been much stronger.
The Sheffield Daily Telegraph of 30/09/1884 recorded the match, as follows, failing to differentiate between a win a-piece on the one hand, and two draws on the other, and also failing to provide initials for all but one Huddersfield/Holmfirth player:
* It appears a further game, not legible in the report, was won by a Huddersfield/Holmfirth player on board 1, 3 or 5.
The present writer’s interpretations as to players’ probable identities and club membership, were determined, are as follows:
